Yonex BG80 vs BG65 String: Which one to choose according to your game?

Yonex BG80 vs BG65 String: Which one to choose according to your game?

This is THE question we get asked most often at the workshop: "BG65 or BG80?" The two best-selling Yonex strings in the world, two opposing philosophies. The verdict of a stringer who installs them every week.

In short: The BG65 (0.70 mm) is the tank: durable, comfortable, perfect for beginners and clubs. The BG80 (0.68 mm) is the rocket: explosive on smashes thanks to its Vectran sheath, but it breaks faster and is less forgiving. Beginner or frequent string breaker → BG65. Experienced attacker → BG80.

BG65: The indestructible string known by all clubs

A 0.70 mm multifilament, the BG65 can handle anything: off-center hits, plastic shuttlecocks, aggressive Monday night smashes. It's the string we recommend to 90% of beginners and anyone who breaks strings too often. Available in a 200m reel — rated 4.75/5 by our customers.

BG80: The explosive choice for attackers

Its Vectran fiber sheath (also used in racing sails) makes it stiffer and more responsive: the shuttlecock flies off like a bullet. On smashes, the difference is audible — that crisp snap that players love. In return: shorter lifespan and less forgiveness for mishits.

Our verdict based on your profile

  • You're a beginner → BG65 at 8–9.5 kg, no hesitation
  • You play doubles and seek speed → BG80 at 10–11 kg, or Exbolt 63
  • You smash hard and often → BG80 at your usual tension
  • You break a string every month → BG65, your wallet will thank you

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the BG80 really break faster?

Yes, its thinner gauge and stiffness make it less durable than the BG65 — expect approximately 30 to 40% less lifespan depending on your stroke.

Can you put BG80 on a beginner's racket?

Technically yes, but it's like putting F1 tires on a city car: you'll pay more without fully exploiting its potential.

What tension for BG80?

It performs best between 10 and 12 kg. Below 9.5 kg, prefer BG65 or BG65 Ti.
