How to choose your badminton shoes? The complete guide

In summary: a good badminton shoe must be light, offer a non-marking sole (rubber) for grip on indoor courts, good forefoot cushioning, and solid lateral support. Take your usual size, or even half a size larger to allow room for your toes during lunges. Absolutely avoid running shoes: their sole and cushioning are not suitable for the lateral movements of badminton.

Choosing your badminton shoes is primarily a matter of safety (to prevent sprains) and performance (speed of movement). To see our selection, browse our badminton shoes.

Why specific badminton shoes?

Badminton involves lateral movements, lunges, sudden stops, and jumps. A running shoe is designed for forward movement and has a thick sole: in badminton, it would make you roll your ankle. A badminton shoe (indoor) is low, stable, and grippy, designed for these explosive supports.

The 5 truly important criteria

1. The sole (the most important)

Made of non-marking rubber, which grips gym floors (wood, PVC, taraflex) without leaving marks. This is what allows you to stop dead without slipping.

2. Cushioning

Concentrated on the forefoot and heel, where you absorb lunges and jump landings (Yonex Power Cushion, Victor Energy Max, Li-Ning Bounse+). It protects your knees and back.

3. Weight

The lighter the shoe, the faster you are. Performance models weigh around 290–320 g.

4. Lateral support

Good reinforcement on the sides prevents the foot from coming out of the shoe during lateral supports: your first protection against sprains.

5. Size

Take your usual size or half a size up: during a lunge, the foot slides slightly forward. Always try them on with your sports socks.

What level, what shoe?

Beginner / recreational: an entry-level model with a good sole is sufficient. The main thing is safety.

Regular club player: move up in range for cushioning and support — your joints must be protected.

Competitor: aim for high-end (Yonex Aerus/Eclipsion, Victor S/A series, Li-Ning pro).

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Playing in running shoes or city sneakers: unsuitable sole, risk of sprain.
  • Taking too small a size: crushed toes during lunges.
  • Neglecting renewal: plan for a change every 1 to 2 years depending on playing frequency.

Frequently asked questions

Can you play badminton with running shoes?
No, it's not recommended. Their sole and cushioning are designed for forward running, not for the lateral movements of badminton: increased risk of sprain.

What size should I choose for badminton shoes?
Your usual size or half a size up, to allow room for your toes during lunges. Try them on with your sports socks.

Are badminton shoes suitable for squash or volleyball?
Yes: they are indoor shoes with non-marking soles, suitable for most indoor sports.

How often should I change my badminton shoes?
Every 1 to 2 years for a regular player, or as soon as the sole is smooth and no longer grips.

What is the difference between a badminton shoe and a tennis shoe?
Badminton shoes are lighter and lower, with a non-marking sole for indoor use; tennis shoes are stiffer and heavier, for outdoor use.
