A badminton racket needs maintenance. Yet, most players only think about maintenance once damage is visible — broken strings, worn grip, scratched frame. The result: degraded performance and a racket that ages prematurely.
At DC.Sports, we string and repair hundreds of rackets each year. Here are the 7 golden rules our technicians always apply.
🎯 In Summary
Regular maintenance multiplies your racket's lifespan by 2 to 3, maintains your playing feel, and prevents injuries related to degraded equipment.
1. Monitor and replace the strings
Strings are the number 1 wear-and-tear part of a racket. Even without visible breakage, strings lose elasticity and repulsion over time.
🎯
Regular player (2x/week)
Restring every 3 to 4 months. Performance drops long before breakage.
📅
Occasional player (1x/week)
Restring 1 to 2 times a year, or as soon as you feel a loss of power.
🏆
Competitive player
Restring before each tournament. Some pros change strings every week.
⚠️ Signs that restringing is needed
Strings slipping on impact, a "dead" feeling in the center of the string bed, loss of control on dropshots — all indicators that your strings are at their limit.
2. Maintain the grip
The grip is in direct contact with your hand. A worn grip slips, reduces control, and can cause forearm or elbow pain.
1
Check condition after each sessionA grip that loses its tackiness or peels should be replaced immediately.
2
Use an overgrip to extend its lifespanAn absorbent overgrip (like Yonex AC102 or Victor) costs less than €2 and takes just a few minutes to apply.
3
Change the base grip once a yearEven with an overgrip, the original grip compresses and loses its cushioning over time.
💡
Pro Tip
After each session, wipe your grip with a dry cloth. Humidity is the grip's number 1 enemy: it encourages mold and accelerates degradation.
3. Clean the frame and string bed
Dust, sweat, and shuttlecock residue accumulate on the frame and between the strings. Regular cleaning preserves the material's integrity and prevents grommet corrosion.
🧹
Weekly cleaning
Damp cloth (clean water) on the frame. Never use solvents or abrasive products.
🔍
String bed cleaning
Run a soft cloth between the strings to remove dust and feather residue.
🚫
What to avoid
Alcohol, acetone, hot water — these products weaken graphite and dissolve adhesives.
4. Properly store your racket
Storage is often neglected, yet a poor environment can deform a frame or cause string tension to drop by several pounds.
| Condition |
Recommendation |
Why? |
| Temperature |
15 – 25°C |
Heat loosens strings and weakens the graphite frame |
| Humidity |
Avoid prolonged humidity |
Promotes grommet corrosion and grip deterioration |
| Cover |
Always store in a cover |
Protects from shock, dust, and thermal variations |
| Position |
Flat or vertical |
Prevents frame deformation under the weight of other equipment |
| Car |
Never in the trunk in summer |
Temperature can exceed 60°C and irreversibly damage the racket |
5. Check string tension
String tension naturally decreases over time, even without use. A racket strung at 26 lbs will lose 1 to 2 lbs in a few weeks simply due to the natural relaxation of the fibers.

David's advice — DC.Sports
YONEX France certified stringing technician
If you feel your racket lacks precision, have the tension measured before concluding that the strings are broken. Often, a simple restringing at the correct tension is enough to regain your feel.
📐 Normal tension loss
Up to 10% loss within 24 hours of stringing, then 1 to 2 lbs per month depending on use. This is completely normal and expected.
6. Protect the frame
The frame is the most exposed part to impacts during close exchanges or ground shots. A bumper guard can make the difference between a racket that lasts 1 year and one that lasts 5 years.
🛡️
Bumper Guard
Plastic protection on the top of the frame. Prevents deep scratches on the graphite.
🎧
Protection tape
Transparent or colored adhesive film on the edges. Economical and aesthetic solution.
👁️
Grommet inspection
Regularly check the grommets. A broken grommet cuts the strings and can deeply damage the frame.
💡
Tip
On high-end rackets (Yonex Astrox 100, Victor DriveX...), the bumper guard is often integrated. For others, universal kits are available in our DC.Sports store.
