A new ranking system since September 1, 2025
Since September 1, 2025, the French Badminton Federation (FFBAD) has implemented a new ranking system. This reform brings a major change in point calculation: from now on, points gained or lost directly depend on the level of the opponent faced.
In other words, beating a higher-ranked player earns more points, while losing to a lower-ranked player costs more. The objective is to better reflect the true level of each player and avoid overly unbalanced matches.
What is reclassification?
Reclassification is a procedure allowing any licensed player to request a modification of their ranking at any time during the season. It can concern both an increase and a decrease in ranking. This option is particularly useful in two situations:
-
Return after a prolonged break: a player returning after an injury or a long break can request to be downgraded to find a suitable level of competition.
-
Evolution of playing level: a player whose level has significantly changed (improvement or decrease) can formalize this evolution via a reclassification request.
Who processes the reclassification request?
The processing of the request depends on the level of the player concerned:
- If the player has at least one National (N) ranking in a discipline, the request is processed directly by the FFBaD.
- If the player has no national ranking, the request is handled by the player's affiliated league.
- Special case: young players ranked in the Top 30 of their age category also have their request processed by the FFBaD.
How to submit a reclassification request?
The request cannot be submitted directly by the player themselves. It must be formulated by an authorized person within the club: club manager, ranking manager of a league or of the FFBaD. Here are the steps:
- Log in to the Poona software with an authorized account.
- Go to the Member Management tab.
- Click on Reclassification Request.
- Fill out the request, precisely justifying the reason and proposing an appropriate rating.
Please note: any request must be carefully justified. Requests aimed at improving rankings solely to qualify for a French Championship will be examined with particular rigor.
What the FFBAD regulations say
According to the Badminton Guide (chapter 03.06, paragraphs 6.2 to 6.4), the FFBaD retains full authority over ranking management. It can accept, modify, or reject any request, and reserves the right to correct decisions made by the leagues. It can also collectively or individually modify ratings in the sporting interest of the federation.
In summary: key points of the reform
- New point calculation based on the opponent's level (positive and negative).
- Reclassification request possible at any time during the season.
- Procedure via the Poona software, by an authorized club person.
- Processing by the league or the FFBaD depending on the player's level.
- Objective: fairer rankings and better balanced matches.
